TikTok vs Reels vs YouTube Shorts: which platform gets more views?

By ViralVideoSearch Research · Last updated 28 October 2026 · n=6,371 analysed viral videos

Among 6,371 viral videos we analysed, TikTok carries the highest median views (858K, n=3,366), YouTube Shorts is next (500K, n=532), and Instagram Reels lowest (62K, n=2,473). The Reels sample is large, so its lower median is a real pattern in this dataset, not noise.

    Instagram Reels61,5782,473
    YouTube Shorts500,478532

Our capture covers these three platforms only; this says nothing about other surfaces.

TikTok's median viral video (858K views, n=3,366) reaches roughly 14x the Instagram Reels median (62K, n=2,473). TikTok's recommendation feed remains the most aggressive distributor of unknown content.

Reels' lower median reflects a different distribution model: more weight on the existing social graph, less on pure recommendation. Videos still go viral on Reels — 2,473 of them are in this index — but the typical viral outcome is smaller.

Practical implication: the same video can be posted to all three, but expectations should be calibrated per platform, and TikTok is where format experiments get the fastest feedback.

    How to use this

    1. Post to all three platforms — the marginal cost is near zero and the audiences differ.
    2. Calibrate expectations: a strong Reels outcome is smaller in absolute views than a strong TikTok outcome.
    3. Use TikTok as the test bed; port winners to Reels and Shorts.
    4. Track your own cross-platform ratios — niche medians differ from the global ones here.

    FAQ

Which platform is easiest to go viral on?

By median outcome among viral videos, TikTok leads (858K median views, n=3,366). Its recommendation feed gives unknown accounts the largest absolute reach.

    Is Instagram Reels worth it?

Yes — 2,473 Reels are in this viral index. The typical viral outcome is smaller than TikTok's, but Reels reaches a different, often older and more purchase-ready audience.

Why is the YouTube Shorts sample smaller?

Our capture queries favour TikTok and Instagram; the Shorts sample (n=532) is large enough to read but should be treated as indicative.

    Methodology

    • Dataset: 6,371 short videos our system detected as viral or trending across TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, analysed frame by frame between 20 April 2026 and 28 October 2026.
    • Figures are medians within each group; medians resist the outlier skew that distorts averages in view data.
    • Every group states its sample size (n). Groups under 100 videos are flagged as small samples.
    • These are correlations among videos that already went viral in our capture — not a census of all short video, and not a guarantee that any trait causes reach.
    • Recomputed 28 October 2026 from the live index; refreshed monthly.
