Which hook gets the most views? Data from viral videos
By ViralVideoSearch Research · Last updated 28 October 2026 · n=6,371 analysed viral videos
Among 6,371 videos our system detected as viral, shock hooks carry the highest median views (543K, n=145), followed by direct questions (523K, n=261). Visual hooks are the most common opener (n=2,808) with a 258K median. Shock and question samples are small, so treat their medians as indicative.
| Group | Median views | Videos analysed |
|---|---|---|
| Visual hook | 258,460 | 2,808 |
| Bold claim | 214,169 | 1,783 |
| Curiosity gap | 358,700 | 1,175 |
| Question | 522,500 | 261 |
| Shock | 543,400 | 145 |
| Relatabilitysmall sample | 541,500 | 93 |
Groups with fewer than 100 videos are small samples — read their medians as indicative, not definitive.
The hook style we see most often is not the one with the highest median. Visual hooks — the video opens on the thing itself, no spoken or written setup — account for 2,808 of 6,371 analysed viral videos (44.1%), but their median views (258K) sit below shock (543K) and question openers.
The pattern reads as volume versus ceiling. A visual hook is the default way to open a short video, so it dominates the count. Shock and question openers are rarer and riskier — when they land, the median video travels further, but far fewer creators attempt them. The small samples (n=145 and n=261) mean the exact medians will move as the index grows.
These are medians among videos that already went viral in our capture — a comparison of what worked, not proof that a hook style causes reach.
How to use this
- Open with the strongest visual you have — the data says that is the baseline expectation, not a differentiator.
- If your content genuinely supports a shock or question opener, test it: the medians suggest a higher ceiling, but the sample is small.
- Match the hook to the format: a curiosity gap works in talking-head videos, a visual hook carries b-roll montages.
- Study real examples in the recreation library below before committing to a style.

FAQ
What is the most common hook in viral videos?
Visual hooks — opening on the thing itself with no spoken or written setup. They account for 2,808 of 6,371 analysed viral videos (44.1%).
Do question hooks get more views?
In our data, yes on median: 523K median views versus 258K for visual hooks. But the question sample is small (n=261), so treat the gap as indicative.
Does the hook guarantee virality?
No. Every video in this dataset already went viral, so these medians compare what worked among winners. A hook style is one variable alongside topic, format, pacing and distribution.
Methodology
- Dataset: 6,371 short videos our system detected as viral or trending across TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, analysed frame by frame between 20 April 2026 and 28 October 2026.
- Figures are medians within each group; medians resist the outlier skew that distorts averages in view data.
- Every group states its sample size (n). Groups under 100 videos are flagged as small samples.
- These are correlations among videos that already went viral in our capture — not a census of all short video, and not a guarantee that any trait causes reach.
- Recomputed 28 October 2026 from the live index; refreshed monthly.
