What 1,328 viral short videos actually have in common
We watch short videos frame by frame — every cut, every on-screen word, every spoken line. These are the counted results across 1,328 of them, captured between 20 April 2026 and 9 September 2026. Nothing here is estimated or modelled. Quote any of it; a link back is appreciated.
56.3% of them contain no spoken words at all
747 of the 1,328 videos have an empty speech track — no voiceover, no piece to camera, nobody talking. The whole message is carried by footage, on-screen text and sound. That is the single most consistent finding in our index, and it is far higher on TikTok than anywhere else.
- TikTok: 472 of 712 (66.3%)
- Instagram Reels: 253 of 571 (44.3%)
- YouTube Shorts: 22 of 45 (48.9%)
Practical consequence: any tool that reads captions or transcripts to work out why a video succeeded is blind to more than half of what succeeds.
The first second is usually visual, not verbal
More than half open on a visual hook — a frame that creates a question before a single word appears. Spoken or written claims come second.
| Pattern | Videos | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Visual hook (the first frame does the work, no words needed) | 706 | 53.2% |

| Direct question | 30 | 2.3% |

69.4% ask the viewer for nothing
No follow prompt, no link in bio, no "comment below". The most-shared advice in short video marketing is the thing most breakout videos skip.

|---|---|---|
| No call to action at all | 922 | 69.4% |

Format and pacing
B-roll montage outnumbers talking head by a clear margin, which fits the silence finding: footage cut to music does not need a presenter.

Reach is not follower count
Across 3,920 videos captured in the last 60 days, 2,593 had a verified follower count. The median video in that set was seen 45.7 times its creator's follower count, and 76.5% reached at least ten times their following.
Small accounts do it more reliably, not less: of the 737 captured videos from accounts under 10,000 followers, 95.9% passed ten times their follower count.
How these numbers were produced
We capture short videos daily across 3 platforms in fifteen subject areas, then run frame-level video understanding over them — shot boundaries, on-screen text, spoken audio, props and setting.
The cohort. Only analyses that completed at full fidelity are counted: 1,328 videos (TikTok 712, Instagram Reels 571, YouTube Shorts 45). Runs that fell back to a degraded pass, or finished with low confidence, are excluded entirely — otherwise a failed audio pass would be miscounted as a silent video.
"No spoken dialogue" means a successful run produced zero speech segments — there was nothing to transcribe.
Known limits. This is what our capture reaches, not a census of short video. Fifteen subject areas, English-language queries, and a YouTube Shorts sample small enough (45) that its percentages should be read as indicative only. Category labels come from an AI classifier, so they carry its judgement, and they are normalised before counting.
Counted on 9 September 2026. Figures move as the index grows; this page is recounted, not extrapolated.
