POV videos get the most views: format data from viral videos

By ViralVideoSearch Research · Last updated 28 October 2026 · n=6,371 analysed viral videos

Yes — among 6,371 videos our system detected as viral, POV (point-of-view) videos carry the highest median views of any major format: 603K across n=470 videos. That is roughly 1.8x the talking-head median (334K). Correlation among viral videos, not a guarantee for any single post.

POV videos put the viewer inside a scenario — "POV: your teacher realises you cheated" — and the format's median of 603K views (n=470) leads every other major format in the index. Talking head (334K, n=1,894) and b-roll montage (353K, n=1,730) are far more common but sit well below it.

The likely mechanism is relatability plus low production cost: a POV video needs one person, one scenario and a text overlay, and the viewer is cast as the protagonist. That combination travels well in recommendation feeds.

Caveat: medians among videos that already went viral. POV's lead is real in this dataset, but it describes what spread, not what will spread for your account.

    How to use this

    1. Write the scenario in one line — if it needs two sentences of setup, the POV is too complex.
    2. Cast the viewer, not yourself: 'POV: you…' outperforms 'POV: me…' framing in relatability.
    3. Keep production minimal; the format's power is the idea, not the edit.
    4. Compare against your niche baseline — check the niche report for your topic before committing.

    FAQ

    What is a POV video?

A point-of-view video casts the viewer (or the creator) inside a specific scenario, usually introduced with a 'POV:' text overlay. The format relies on relatability rather than production value.

Which video format gets the most views?

In our index of 6,371 viral videos, POV leads with 603K median views (n=470), ahead of text-overlay-only and b-roll montage formats.

    Is talking head dead?

No — talking head is the most common viral format in our data (n=1,894) with a 334K median. It is the reliable baseline; POV is the higher-ceiling outlier.

    Methodology

    • Dataset: 6,371 short videos our system detected as viral or trending across TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, analysed frame by frame between 20 April 2026 and 28 October 2026.
    • Figures are medians within each group; medians resist the outlier skew that distorts averages in view data.
    • Every group states its sample size (n). Groups under 100 videos are flagged as small samples.
    • These are correlations among videos that already went viral in our capture — not a census of all short video, and not a guarantee that any trait causes reach.
    • Recomputed 28 October 2026 from the live index; refreshed monthly.
